It's made of 5 acrylic panels that are 3/16" thick (4 walls and the top). The four posts are ebony stained, solid pine. The acrylic door panel is held in place with extruded aluminum tracks that are screwed to the posts. The side and rear panels slide and fit easily into grooves that are cut into the posts. The bottom is a durable, double-sided black melamine and both the bottom and the top are fastened tightly in place with easily removable furniture screws. Yes, it is very sturdy. Yes. The beauty of the Fido Flat is that is serves more than one purpose and duals as a table as well as a crate for crate-trained dogs. For people like us who live in a small condo, it is important to utilize space efficiently, and the Fido Flat is an excellent use of space for any apartment, loft, condo, flat, or home of any size.
As I create this website, the Fido Flat next to my side of the bed (where my pug, Owen, is crated) has a number of things on top. There is thin, metal lamp that stands about 3 feet tall, a small fan, my clock, my cell phone, a granite coaster with a full glass of water, and September's issue of Golf Digest. All total, these items weigh about 12 pounds. Can the top hold more? Yes, but 10-15 pounds would be about the most weight you'd want resting on the top acrylic panel.
The front door slides up and down along the aluminum track using an aluminum handle. There is a hole in the front acrylic door where you can insert a lynch-pin (included) to lock the door closed or lock it in the open position so your dog can go easily in and out.
The Fido Flat comes with 114 1-inch air holes that are laser-cut into the acrylic panels (top excluded). When the Fido Flat is used correctly (see next question) the temperature inside the Fido Flat is the same as the temperature surrounding the Fido Flat in the room in which it is used.
